More updates reached us overnight, the first from Keith [Longmore, Communications Director]:

‘Thursday 8 January:

‘Company day off today which gave a chance for the civic welcomes and receptions. A group of us attended a lunch given by Wragge and Co (not one of our sponsors) who were launching their China office. Was a full five course lunch and not the buffet that we had thought. For some, having this just two hours after breakfast was a bit of a challenge. After launch we went to the Learning sharing – more of that from Pearl [Chesterman, Director for Learning] I’m sure.

‘My news on that is that we set off in three taxis, each with the wrong translation. A frantic hour later, two out of the three finally arrived at the Guangdong Modern Dance Theatre….better late than never I guess.

‘Bit of sad news later in the day, Margaret Waddington and her husband arrived on Weds night and on Thurs eve, on way to a civic reception, Derek fell and has broken his thigh bone. He was whisked to hospital – the Chinese hospital for traditional medicine, then finally taken to a more modern
unit where he awaits an operation. Poor Margaret may have to be here a month before they can get him home.

‘Anyway, Friday night is the first night, it’s mad, we don’t have enough tickets and I’m still working on my translation of the word NO!!!! but it will be great and as ever, wish you could all be here to share it.
